September: Romanticizing My Life

Sunday Diaries | Slow Living, Simple Joys & Finding My Way Back to Myself

Hello friends,

There’s something about September that always makes me want to slow down and take a good look at my life. Maybe it’s the change in seasons. Maybe it’s the cooler mornings, the promise of fall, or simply the feeling that a new chapter is quietly beginning. Lately, I’ve been thinking about what it means to romanticize my life—not in some picture-perfect, unrealistic way, but in the simplest sense.

Finding beauty in my everyday life.

Making ordinary days feel a little more special. And permitting myself to enjoy the little things. After a season of life that has felt heavy and emotionally exhausting, I think I need some of that right now.

My September reset

This month, I want to be more intentional about how I spend my time. One of the biggest things I’m working on is not scheduling every minute of my day whenever possible. A day off should actually feel like a day off. I want mornings that aren’t rushed. I want time for coffee, wandering around the house, getting dressed simply because I like what I’m wearing, and allowing myself to see where the day takes me. I want to dress in what I’m calling my love-language aesthetic—pieces that feel like me. Soft textures, natural fibers, vintage finds, cozy layers, and clothing that makes getting dressed feel enjoyable rather than something I simply have to do. I want to move my body again, too. Getting back to the gym when I can. Taking walks. Stretching. Simply remembering that movement doesn’t have to be about punishment or perfection. Sometimes it’s just about feeling good in my body and having more life energy. And then there is food. I want to make more things from scratch. Recently, I made pancakes, and honestly, it felt like such a small but lovely accomplishment. There was something comforting about slowing down enough to make breakfast instead of rushing through it. I want to explore comfort food this season, too. Warm meals. Cozy recipes. Something simmering on the stove. Maybe even going out for dinner on a random Wednesday simply because we can. Why not?

Making room for spontaneity

I think adulthood can make us forget how to be spontaneous. There are always schedules, responsibilities, errands, work, appointments, and things waiting to be checked off the list. But I don’t want every day to feel like a checklist. I want to leave a little room for the unexpected.

  • A last-minute coffee.

  • A drive somewhere just because.

  • Dinner out on a Wednesday.

  • A slow afternoon at home.

  • A conversation that lasts longer than expected.

  • Sometimes the best memories aren’t the ones we carefully planned.

Family, time and the moments that matter

This month is also about having more meaningful engagements—time with family. My son came to visit, and having that time together meant more to me than I can really put into words. After a difficult season, moments like these remind me how precious time is and how quickly life can change. It makes me want to be more present. To put the phone down. To listen a little longer. To enjoy the people sitting across from me. Life has a funny way of reminding us that the ordinary moments are often the extraordinary ones.

A little deep cleaning, a little fresh start

Of course, September wouldn’t be complete without a little deep cleaning. There is something about opening the windows, clearing out clutter, freshening up a room, and resetting my favorite spaces that makes me feel lighter. I’m not trying to create a perfect home. I just want a home that feels peaceful and comforting—a place where I can breathe. Sometimes a deep clean is about much more than cleaning. Sometimes you’re clearing out a little emotional clutter, too.

Romanticizing the ordinary

My September intention:

  • Romanticize the ordinary.

  • Wear the outfit.

  • Make the pancakes.

  • Go out for dinner on a Wednesday.

  • Take the day off.

  • Move your body.

  • Make something from scratch.

  • Spend time with the people you love.

  • Deep clean a room.

  • Light a candle.

  • Put on music.

  • Be spontaneous.

  • Notice the changing season.

And most importantly, permit yourself to enjoy your life exactly as it is right now. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. Maybe romanticizing your life isn’t about creating a life that looks beautiful from the outside. Maybe it’s about learning to notice the beauty that’s already there. And that’s what I’m hoping to do this September. One ordinary, beautiful day at a time. 🍂
