My Journey to Living a More Analog Life Through Self-Care

Hello friends,

I am so grateful that you could join me today.

As I sit here with my morning coffee on this beautiful Sunday, I’ve been reflecting on how much my life has changed over the years. Somewhere between raising children, working, managing a household, and taking care of everyone else, I slowly stopped making myself a priority. Not completely, of course. I still showered, got dressed, and handled the basics. But true self-care—the kind that nourishes your mind, body, and spirit—slowly slipped to the bottom of my list. Now that my children are grown, I find myself in a new season of life. A season where I am learning to care for myself again, not out of vanity, but because I deserve the same kindness and attention that I have spent years giving to others. Lately, I’ve been embracing a more analog lifestyle, slowing down, being present, and finding joy in simple daily rituals. This journey has become an important part of my self-care routine, and today I wanted to share what that looks like for me.

Finding My Personal Style Again

One of the first things I started focusing on was how I present myself each day. For years, my uniform consisted mostly of leggings, oversized t-shirts, ponytails, and messy buns. There is absolutely nothing wrong with comfort, but I realized I had stopped expressing myself through clothing and personal style. Recently, I’ve been having fun rediscovering fashion and figuring out what aesthetic truly feels like me. The truth is, I love a little bit of everything. I enjoy the cozy charm of the fisherman aesthetic, the earthy feel of granola style, and the moody, relaxed look that feels both comfortable and sophisticated. Somehow, I try to blend them all while adding my own touch of chic simplicity. Since I am currently working on my health and losing weight, I don’t want to spend a lot of money on new clothes. Instead, I’ve fallen in love with thrifting. Not only is it budget-friendly, but it also allows me to experiment with different styles without breaking the bank. There’s something so satisfying about finding a beautiful piece secondhand and giving it a new life.

Staying Active Without Making It Complicated

When people think about fitness, they often picture intense workouts or spending hours at the gym. For me, healthy living looks much simpler. I go to the gym twice a week on Saturdays and Mondays, but I stay active in many other ways throughout the week. I enjoy gardening, walking Wally—our Doberman—running errands, cleaning the house, and simply moving my body whenever I can. Because my job keeps me on my feet, I average nearly 20,000 steps a day, four days a week. While I may not be running marathons, all of that movement adds up. I’ve learned that consistency matters more than perfection. Staying active doesn’t have to look impressive. It simply needs to fit your lifestyle.

My Simple Skincare Routine

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that skincare doesn’t need to be complicated. My skincare routine is surprisingly simple, and honestly, that’s one of the reasons I stick with it. I wash my face using Safeguard Beige Soap because it works well with my sensitive skin and helps keep breakouts under control. After cleansing, I apply Cetaphil moisturizer to keep my skin hydrated. Once a week, or twice if I’m experiencing a breakout, I use Dr. Botanicals Pomegranate Superfood Sleeping Mask. It’s become a nice little self-care ritual that helps my skin feel refreshed. Another habit I’ve developed is drinking a glass of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice every morning with no added sugar. Over time, I’ve noticed improvements in the appearance of age spots, acne scars, and other areas of discoloration on my skin. Of course, everyone’s skin is different, and I’m simply sharing what has worked for me personally. I am not affiliated with any of these products—they’re just items I genuinely enjoy using.

Simple Hair and Nails on a Budget

I still prefer easy hairstyles, especially since I like keeping my hair off my face. The difference now is that I put a little more effort into making simple hairstyles feel intentional. Instead of always reaching for a basic ponytail or bun, I often braid my hair or add pretty accessories that help me feel more put together. The same goes for my nails. I’ve always loved having beautiful nails, but regular salon visits became expensive and time-consuming. These days, I use press-on nails and honestly couldn’t be happier with the results. I can apply them at home in about thirty minutes, compared to spending hours at a nail salon. With the right application, they typically last two to three weeks, which works perfectly for my lifestyle. To help them stay in place, I use Beetle's Nail Glue, which has been the strongest and most reliable adhesive I’ve personally tried. For me, this is one of those simple ways to feel polished without spending a fortune.

My Clean Eating Journey

Over the last several months, I’ve noticed that my taste preferences have changed. Foods I used to enjoy no longer appeal to me the way they once did. I’ve naturally started eating more seafood and occasionally enjoying a good steak while reducing my consumption of chicken and pork. I also try to avoid heavily processed foods whenever possible. Lunch meats, packaged ramen, and other high-sodium convenience foods simply don’t make me feel my best. Instead, I focus on filling my plate with fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and homemade smoothies. This approach to clean eating isn’t about restriction. It’s about choosing foods that help me feel energized, nourished, and healthy. As I’ve entered my fifties, I’ve become more aware that food is not only fuel—it also impacts my mood, energy levels, and overall well-being.

Slowing Down and Living More Mindfully

One of the biggest changes I’ve made is learning how to slow down. For years, I rushed through everything. Now, I intentionally start my mornings at a gentler pace. When I wake up, I stretch, splash cool water on my face, brush my teeth, and make my bed. These small habits only take a few minutes, but they create a sense of calm and accomplishment before the day even begins. On weekends, one of my favorite rituals is stepping outside with a cup of coffee and spending time in the garden with Dennis. We can easily spend an hour or more tending plants, enjoying the sunshine, and simply being present together. These quiet moments have become some of my favorite forms of self-care.

Rediscovering Journaling and Reading

Journaling has become one of the most valuable tools in my self-care routine. Some days, I write about my goals. Other days, I write about my worries, my gratitude, or simply whatever happens to be on my mind. I think of journaling as a way to clear mental clutter. When thoughts are spinning around in my head, putting them onto paper helps me process them and move forward with greater clarity. I’ve also rediscovered my love for reading. Years ago, I primarily read crime thrillers and FBI fiction. While those books were entertaining, I eventually realized they often left me feeling anxious or unsettled. These days, I gravitate toward cozy, heartwarming small-town romance novels that leave me feeling uplifted and hopeful. The stories we consume influence our mindset more than we realize, and I’ve become much more intentional about what I allow into my mental space.

Limiting Social Media and Being More Present

Part of embracing a more analog lifestyle has meant reducing my screen time. I still enjoy social media and appreciate the inspiration and community it can provide. However, I’ve become much more mindful about how much time I spend scrolling. Setting limits has allowed me to be more present in my everyday life. Instead of constantly reaching for my phone, I’m spending more time connecting with Dennis, caring for our home, reading, gardening, journaling, and simply enjoying the little moments that make life beautiful. Ironically, the less time I spend online, the more connected I feel to the people and experiences that truly matter.

Final Thoughts

My journey toward a more analog life isn’t about perfection. It’s about intentionally creating a lifestyle that supports my mental health, physical well-being, and personal happiness. Through simple self-care habits, clean eating, mindful living, journaling, reading, and spending less time on social media, I’m learning to slow down and appreciate life in a way I never have before. The older I get, the more I realize that self-care isn’t selfish. It’s necessary.
