Planning Our 6-Hour Road Trip from Las Vegas to the River

Dearest friends,

I am so glad that you could join me today! I hope you are having a beautiful Sunday wherever you are. Today I wanted to share something that always brings me a sense of excitement and adventure—planning a road trip.

As many of you know, I love simple outdoor adventures, camping, and spending time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This week, we are preparing for a six-hour road trip from Las Vegas to the river, and I thought it would be fun to take you along as I share how I prepare for a long drive, what I pack, and a few tips that help make the journey more enjoyable.

For me, a road trip isn’t just about reaching the destination. The drive itself is part of the adventure. There is something special about watching the scenery change, listening to your favorite music, and knowing that a few hours down the road you’ll be surrounded by nature.

Planning the Route

One of the first things I do when preparing for a road trip is plan our route. We use the navigation system in our truck, which gives us three different route options to choose from.

Now, you might think the fastest route is always the best choice, but I’ve learned that’s not necessarily true. On this particular trip, we will actually be avoiding the fastest route because there are very few gas stations and rest stops along the way. Instead, we’ll take a slightly longer route that gives us more opportunities to stop for fuel, stretch our legs, and grab a snack if needed.

When planning a road trip, I always recommend looking beyond the estimated arrival time. Think about comfort, convenience, and safety. Knowing where gas stations, rest areas, and small towns are located can make a huge difference during a long drive.

One of my favorite parts of road trip planning is researching interesting stops along the way. Sometimes we’ll discover a scenic overlook, a charming local diner, or a small roadside attraction we never knew existed. Those unexpected discoveries often become some of our favorite memories.

Why I Love River Camping

The river has become one of my favorite places to escape. Living in Las Vegas, I appreciate any opportunity to be near water and cooler weather. There is something incredibly peaceful about listening to the river flow while enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning.

River camping allows me to slow down and reconnect with nature. It gives me a chance to step away from screens, busy schedules, and everyday responsibilities. Even though the drive takes six hours, I always feel refreshed once we arrive. The journey reminds me that sometimes the best experiences require a little extra effort. The destination is worth every mile.

Creating My Road Trip Checklist

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you probably know that I love lists that help organize my travel. While I no longer create overwhelming daily to-do lists, I absolutely believe in having a road trip checklist.

A good packing list helps me stay organized and reduces stress before we leave. Instead of worrying that I’ve forgotten something important, I can simply check items off as I pack them.

Here are some of the categories I include on my road trip packing checklist:

Camping Essentials:

  • Tent

  • Sleeping bags

  • Camping chairs

  • Lanterns

  • Flashlights

  • Extra batteries

  • Portable power station

  • Camp table

  • Shade canopy

The weather can change quickly, especially near the water, so I always double-check the forecast before packing.

Cooking Supplies

One of my favorite parts of camping is cooking outdoors.

We pack:

  • Portable grill

  • Propane

  • Cooking utensils

  • Pots and pans

  • Cooler

  • Ice

  • Reusable plates and cups

  • Coffee supplies

Nothing beats enjoying breakfast outside while listening to birds and watching the sun rise over the river.

Clothing

Packing clothing for a camping trip can be tricky because temperatures often vary throughout the day.

I usually pack:

  • Lightweight shirts

  • Comfortable shorts

  • Layers for cool evenings

  • Sweatshirt or jacket

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Water shoes

  • Hat

  • Swimsuit

Even during warmer months, I always bring an extra layer because evenings near the river can be surprisingly cool.

Safety Items

Safety is something I never overlook.

Our emergency supplies include:

  • First aid kit

  • Jumper cables

  • Flashlight

  • Spare batteries

  • Tire repair kit

  • Portable air compressor

  • Emergency water

  • Basic tools

Thankfully, we’ve rarely needed these items, but having them provides peace of mind.

Preparing the Truck

Before any long road trip, we spend some time making sure the truck is ready for the journey.

A few days before we leave, we check:

  • Oil level

  • Tire pressure

  • Tire tread

  • Coolant

  • Brake fluid

  • Windshield washer fluid

We also make sure the spare tire is properly inflated. I can’t tell you how much stress this simple routine has saved us over the years. A little preparation can help prevent unexpected problems on the road. I also make sure our registration and insurance information are easily accessible. It’s one of those small details that’s easy to forget but incredibly important.

Planning Road Trip Meals and Snacks

One of the biggest mistakes I’ve made in the past was assuming we could simply stop whenever we got hungry. Now I always prepare snacks and meals ahead of time. Not only does it save money, but it also helps us make healthier choices.

I also try to use reusable containers whenever possible. It’s a simple way to reduce waste and keep our camping trips a little more eco-friendly.

Entertainment for the Drive

Six hours can feel like a long time if you’re not prepared. Before we leave, I create a playlist filled with my favorite songs. Music has a way of making the miles pass more quickly.

Outdoor Activities

Once we arrive at the river, there are several activities we always enjoy.

Fishing is one of the most relaxing parts of our trip. Whether we catch anything or not, spending time near the water always helps me feel more grounded.

Exploring Nature. I love taking morning walks and exploring the area around our campsite. It allows me to appreciate the beauty of nature and get some exercise at the same time.

Stargazing, one of my absolute favorite parts of camping, is looking up at the night sky. Living near city lights, we don’t always get the opportunity to see the stars clearly. At the river, the sky seems endless. Sitting outside under a blanket of stars reminds me just how beautiful and vast this world really is.

Leaving Room for Spontaneity. While I enjoy planning, I’ve also learned not to over-plan. Some of the best travel memories happen when things don’t go exactly according to schedule.

Preparing for our six-hour road trip from Las Vegas to the river, I find myself feeling excited and grateful. Road trips remind me to slow down and enjoy the journey, not just the destination. They encourage me to step away from daily routines, spend more time outdoors, and appreciate the simple things in life.

Whether you’re planning a weekend camping trip, a family vacation, or a cross-country adventure, I encourage you to embrace the experience. Pack thoughtfully, prepare your vehicle, bring plenty of snacks, and don’t forget to leave room for a little spontaneity.

Some of life’s most beautiful memories are waiting just down the road.

Thank you so much for spending part of your Sunday with me. I truly appreciate every one of you, and I look forward to sharing our river adventure in an upcoming post.

Until next time, friends, safe travels and happy camping.

Susan ❤️
