Coping through hot flashes
Hello friends,
I am so grateful that you could join me today. Sundays have become a time for me to slow down, reflect, and share little pieces of my life and what I am learning along the way.
Lately, I have been navigating perimenopause, and if I am being honest, the hot flashes have been one of the hardest parts. During the cooler fall and winter months, they feel a little more manageable. But once spring and summer arrive, staying cool can feel like a full-time job.
Layering in natural fabrics
Over the past few years, I have really started paying attention to what I wear and how it affects the way I feel. About three years ago, I stopped wearing most synthetic fabrics and switched to natural, breathable materials like cotton and linen. They have truly become my everyday staples, year-round. I have even changed my bedding to cotton and linen because I noticed it helps me sleep more comfortably at night.
One thing that has helped me the most is dressing in layers. When a hot flash hits, being able to remove a layer quickly makes all the difference. Comfort has become more important to me than ever, and I have learned that small changes can make a real difference at this stage of life.
Staying hydrated with cool drinks and lighter food choices
I have also been making an effort to stay hydrated, especially when I travel or spend long days at work. I used to drink hot coffee all day long without thinking twice, but now I try to balance it with iced coffee, cold water, fruit smoothies, and refreshing drinks throughout the day. It has taken some adjusting, but I am learning to listen to what my body needs.
When it comes to meals, I naturally gravitate toward lighter foods during warmer weather. Cold sandwiches, fresh salads, and fruit have become some of my favorite go-to lunches for work because they are simple, refreshing, and easy to prepare in different ways. At home, I still enjoy warm comfort meals, but it helps being able to control the temperature and create a cozy environment around me.
This season of life definitely comes with challenges, but it is also teaching me to slow down, adapt, and care for myself in new ways. I am always learning, and I truly appreciate hearing from others who are on a similar journey.
If you have any tips for staying cool during hot flashes, I would love for you to share them with me. I am always open to trying new ideas and learning from your experiences too.
Thank you so much for spending part of your Sunday with me. I hope your day is filled with peace, comfort, and little moments of joy.
