Dearest friends,
How are you today?
Thank you for spending a few moments with me, whether you join me every Sunday or have just stumbled across this little corner of the internet. If you’re new here, welcome! I’m Susan, and I share snippets of my life in my 50s—navigating anxiety, enjoying camping adventures, creating a cozy home, exploring hobbies, and learning how to slow down and live more intentionally.
Today, I want to share the 10 habits that help me start my day feeling accomplished before breakfast is even finished. These simple routines may seem small, but together they create a sense of calm, productivity, and purpose that carries me through the rest of the day.
Why My Morning Routine Matters More Than Ever
As many of you know, I am an anxious person. Anxiety can show up unexpectedly, even before my feet hit the floor. Sometimes it starts with a stressful dream or waking up with a racing heart.
These days, my mornings look very different than they did in my 20s, 30s, and 40s. Back then, I was focused on staying busy, accomplishing more, and constantly moving from one thing to the next. Now that I’m in my 50s, my priorities have changed.
I’m learning to appreciate a slower pace of life. Instead of rushing through my mornings, I pay attention to the little things—the birds singing outside my window, the morning sunlight filtering through the trees, and the quiet moments before the day begins.
One bird visits my window at nearly the same time every morning. Years ago, I probably wouldn’t have noticed. Now, it’s one of my favorite parts of the day.
These simple morning habits help me feel grounded, present, and prepared for whatever the day brings.
Habit #1: Check In With Myself
The first thing I do each morning is a mental and physical check-in.
It might sound a little strange, but I actually greet myself and take a moment to acknowledge how I’m feeling. I ask myself questions like:
How is my mood today?
Do I feel rested?
Do I have any aches or pains?
Is my anxiety trying to make an appearance?
I also do a full-body stretch while still lying in bed. I reach my arms overhead, point my toes, and gently stretch from head to toe. It helps wake up my joints, get my blood flowing, and ease me into the day.
Once I get out of bed, I continue stretching for a few more minutes before moving on with my morning.
Habit #2: Rehydrate First Thing
Before going to bed each night, I place a bottle of water beside my bed.
I often sip from it during the night, and when I wake up, I finish whatever remains. After several hours of sleep, our bodies naturally become dehydrated. Drinking water first thing in the morning helps me feel refreshed and awake.
It’s such a simple habit, but it makes a noticeable difference in how I feel.
Habit #3: Pay Attention to My Health
After hydrating, I head to the bathroom to splash cold water on my face and brush my teeth.
While I’m there, I do a quick visual check of my skin and overall appearance. Over the years, I’ve learned that my body often gives me clues when something isn’t quite right.
I notice whether my skin looks healthy and vibrant or unusually pale. I also pay attention to changes that might indicate I need extra rest or hydration.
This simple habit helps me stay aware of my overall well-being and notice small changes before they become bigger issues.
Habit #4: Open the Blinds Before Checking My Phone
One habit that has made a huge difference is resisting the urge to immediately check my phone.
Instead, I open the blinds and look outside.
My bedroom window overlooks beautiful trees, and seeing the morning light instantly lifts my mood. I check the weather, listen for the birds, and take in the peacefulness of the morning before allowing technology into my day.
It’s a small act, but it helps me start my morning feeling connected to the world around me instead of immediately reacting to notifications.
Habit #5: Make the Bed
Making the bed is one of the easiest ways to create an early sense of accomplishment.
Before arranging the blankets, I fluff the pillows and shake out the sheets. It’s a simple routine that freshens the bed and makes the room feel tidy and inviting.
Walking back into a neatly made bedroom later in the day always makes me feel calmer and more organized.
Sometimes the smallest tasks have the biggest impact.
Habit #6: Get Dressed for the Day Ahead
I try not to stay in pajamas all morning.
Getting dressed signals to my brain that the day has officially begun.
What I wear depends entirely on what the day holds. Some days it’s gym clothes. Other days it’s comfortable clothing for errands, housework, gardening, or spending time at home.
Regardless of what I’m wearing, getting dressed helps me feel ready to tackle the day.
Habit #7: Enjoy Fresh-Squeezed Grapefruit
One of my favorite morning rituals is drinking fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice.
Not only is it refreshing, but grapefruit contains vitamin C and antioxidants that support overall wellness.
At this stage of life, I’m always looking for simple ways to support my health, and this has become one of those habits I genuinely enjoy. It feels like a small act of self-care that starts my day on a positive note.
Note: Grapefruit can interact with certain medications, so it’s always a good idea to check with your healthcare provider if you take prescription medications.
Habit #8: Step Outside and Enjoy the Morning
This may be my favorite habit of all.
Before the day gets busy, I spend a few moments outside.
I walk through the garden, water plants, pick ripe tomatoes or chilies, and sometimes gather fresh flowers for the house. I soak up a little sunshine, breathe deeply, and simply enjoy being present.
There is something incredibly calming about connecting with nature first thing in the morning.
Whenever I feel anxious or overwhelmed, spending time outdoors reminds me to slow down and appreciate the simple things.
Habit #9: Do a Quick House Reset
Although we keep our home fairly tidy, I like to do a quick morning reset.
This usually includes:
Sweeping floors
Wiping down counters
Dusting surfaces
Straightening blankets and pillows
Putting away anything left out the night before
Starting the day with a clean space helps me feel less distracted and more focused throughout the day.
Habit #10: Move My Body
Exercise has become one of the most important habits in my life.
Dennis and I try to make it to the gym around 7:30 each morning, although we’re happy whenever we can fit it in.
As we get older, maintaining strength, mobility, and balance becomes increasingly important. Going to the gym isn’t about perfection or appearance. It’s about taking care of ourselves so we can continue doing the things we love for years to come.
Even on days when motivation is low, I never regret moving my body.
Final Thoughts
As I’ve grown older, I’ve learned that happiness isn’t found in doing more. It’s found in being present for the life that’s already happening around us.
These morning habits help me begin each day feeling calm, productive, and grateful. They remind me to slow down, care for myself, and appreciate the little moments that once passed me by unnoticed.
Whether it’s listening to the birds, tending the garden, making the bed, or simply drinking a glass of water, these small habits set the tone for my entire day.
I’d love to hear from you.
